The TPW Energy Collaborative brings together individual philanthropists committed to collaborative grantmaking that supports better energy services for people living in developing countries.  This mission is motivated by the belief that better energy services are key to reducing poverty, enriching health and education, and improving the environment.

TPW Energy Collaborative Mission and History of Grantmaking

The Energy Collaborative’s overall mission is to support efforts to promote appropriate energy
solutions for poverty alleviation in the developing world.  TPW Energy Collaborative provides grants to non-profit organizations based in and/or working in developing countries.  Starting in 2008, TPW Energy Collaborative has focused its grants to country-specific projects.  For the next 2 - 3 years, we will be working in India and Honduras.  For more information on ongoing grants, click here.

Energy solutions must be economical, accessible, provide improved health benefits, and have the least impact on the environment as possible.  Much of the past grant work has focused on improving access to energy through renewable energy solutions—often through supporting policy initiatives that can promote renewable energy.

Initiated in November 2004, the group currently consists of seven members, many of whom are alumni of The Philanthropy Workshop (TPW) and The Philanthropy Workshop/West, which are philanthropy education programs sponsored by the Institute for Philanthropy (London) and the Rockefeller, Hewlett, and TOSA Foundations.  The Energy Collaborative began making grants in 2006 and has continued to make grants on an annual basis.

Sustainable and Affordable Energy Services Development

The TPW Energy Collaborative believes that access to sustainable and affordable energy services is essential to poverty reduction.  The work thus far of TPW grantmaking has included financing for efficient lighting, installation of solar home systems, development of cleaner and more efficient cookstoves, regional cookstove certification policy, education and outreach on the potential of wind power, biofuels policy development, and improved transmission policy support.
